Running EMC Unisphere Service Manager natively on Linux

I was installing a new EMC VNX 5100 Block on a customer and was using a Linux distribution for others tasks. I was too lazy to reboot and switch to Windows to open Unisphere and continue with the installation, so I thought: USM is written in Java, why don’t  make it run on Linux? Well, EMC says it is compatible with Windows, but hypothetically it may run on Linux, just need some tweaks, so I did it. First you’ll need to download EMC Unisphere and install it with WINE, it will show some warnings about the JRE, so just ignore it and continue with the “next-next-finish” phylosophy.

One time installed, go to “~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/EMC/ServiceManager/”. If you try to start “Unisphere Service Manager.exe” it will give some error related to java JRE, The solution, is to cat the file named run.bat:

# cat run.bat

And you will see this:

java -classpath framework/core.jar;config/service_def/service_xml.jar com.emc.core.main.FxSwingApplication -PproductKey=NST

If you try to start with this command line, it will not run, so we need to tweak this command line, just replace “;” for “:” and it will run.

java -classpath framework/core.jar:config/service_def/service_xml.jar com.emc.core.main.FxSwingApplication -PproductKey=NST

Proof:

Unisphere Service Manager on Linux

Now I advice you: It isn’t supported by EMC, and logically it won’t run smoothly and perfectly like it runs on Windows, for me its usability is kept at 100%.

The distro I’m using is Ubuntu 12.04 and you MUST have the Oracle JDK 7 installed or it won’t run. I just followed this tutorial to install Oracle JDK 7.
